Rear Output Flange and Driveshaft Seal, Transfer Case Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Slide hammer (VW 771)
• Pulling hook (VW 771/37)
• Retainer (3145)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1601)
• Thrust piece (T40115)
• Socket SW 30
• Sealing grease (G 052 128 A1)
• 2 Bolts M10 x 25
• Counterhold tool (T10172) with adapters (T10172/6)
Removing
- Remove bolts - 1 - from the transfer case/rear driveshaft connection.
- Use the counterhold tool (T10172) with the adapters (T10172/6) to do this.
- Tie up driveshaft to body.
- Remove rear output flange/driveshaft nut.
A Hex bolts M10 x 25
B Socket SW 30
- Remove output flange.
• If it is difficult to move, remove the output flange using a puller - A -, for example (Kukko 20/10).
- Pull out seal using slide hammer-complete set (VW 771) and additional part for VW771 (VW 771/37).
Installing
- Lightly oil outer circumference of new shaft seal.
- Drive in new shaft seal as far as stop without tilting it.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).
- Install the output flange, if necessary use a rubber hammer.
- Coat the new washer - arrow - with transmission oil and install it.
- Insert thrust washer.
- Tighten new nut for output flange to tightening specification.
- Secure driveshaft to transfer case => [ Driveshaft, installing ] Rear Driveshaft.
- Check gear oil level in transfer case. Refer to => [ Checking Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case ] Service and Repair.
