Compressor HVAC: Description and Operation

A/C Compressor Drive Unit

• If the drive plate overload protection activates, check the A/C compressor for ease of movement before replacing the drive unit. If the A/C compressor creates friction, replace it completely.





1 A/C Compressor Drive Shaft

• Check: When the threaded connection is tightened, the driveshaft sits without play in the engine drive wheel splines, refer to => [ A/C Compressor Drive Shaft ] Compressors.

• Tightening specification 60 Nm.

• Loosening and tightening, refer to => [ A/C Compressor Drive Shaft, Loosening and Tightening ] Compressors.

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ A/C Compressor Drive Shaft ] Compressors.

• Grease the splines to the engine drive wheel with Grease (G 000 100).

2 Hex Socket Head Bolt

• Tightening specification 10 Nm.

3 Drive Plate With Overload Protection

• The overload safeguard, triggers when torque is too-high, for example, when the A/C compressor produces friction, and driveshaft runs freely without driving the compressor.

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Plate with Overload Protection ] Compressors.

4 Drive Plate With Overload Protection

• The overload protection activates when the torque is too high (such as when the A/C compressor does not move easily) and the driveshaft runs freely with the drive plate (items 3 and 8) without driving the compressor.

• Connected to the A/C compressor drive shaft.

• Tightening specification 30 Nm.

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Plate Protection ] Compressors.

5 Rubber Element

• Decouples drive unit, dampens vibrations and noises.

• Lightly coat the rubber elements with soapy water (as a lubricant) to install.

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Plate Protection ] Compressors.

6 Spacer

• The original spacer must be installed.

• Dimension: 17.5 x 10 x 3 mm.

7 Circlip

• Replace.

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Plate with Roller Bearing ] Compressors.

• Installation location: flat side to the A/C compressor.

8 Drive Plate

• With roller bearing.

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Plate with Roller Bearing ] Compressors.

• Clean the A/C compressor flange before installing the drive plate.

9 A/C Compressor

• Different versions may be installed, depending on engine version and country version of vehicle.
