Compression Check: Testing and Inspection

Compression, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Spark Plug Removal Tool (3122 B)

• Compression Tester (V.A.G 1763)

• Ignition Coil Puller (T40039)

Procedure

• Engine oil temperature at least 30 °C.

• Battery voltage at least 12.5 V.

- Switch off ignition.

- Install protective body covers. Refer to => [ Protective Body Covers, Installing ] Protective Body Covers, Installing.

- Remove the left - 1 - and right - 3 - engine compartment trim.





- Remove the engine cover - 2 -.

- Bring the rear lid into the service position.





- Remove air filter housing bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the air filter housing.

- Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors - 1 - and - 2 -.





• The installation location is shown with the engine compartment crossmember removed.

- Remove bolts - 5 -.





- Slide the coolant reservoir forward slightly - arrow - and remove it from the bracket.

- Tie the coolant reservoir with connected coolant hoses - 1, 3 and 4 - and connected electrical connector - 2 - to the rear lid hinge.

- Remove the bolt - arrows - and the coolant reservoir bracket.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Disconnect the electrical connectors on the left ignition coils.

- Press the electrical wiring harness to the side.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Disconnect the electrical connectors on the right ignition coils.

- Press the electrical wiring harness to the side.

- Remove all the ignition coils with the Ignition Coil Puller (T40039).





- Remove spark plugs with Spark Plug Removal Tool (3122 B).

- Check compression pressure with Compression Tester (V.A.G 1763); => Operating instructions.

- Have a second person completely depress gas pedal and operate starter long enough until tester no longer indicates increase in pressure.

- Repeat procedure on each cylinder.





Assembly is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Install spark plugs.

- Install air filter housing.

- Install the engine compartment trim.

- Faults have been stored in the engine control modules because the connectors were disconnected: perform a "generate readiness code" under " Guided Functions".
