Shift Interlock: Service and Repair
Shift Mechanism Function Unit
Removing
- Loosen quick-release connectors - 2 - and remove rear noise insulation.
- Remove crossmember from subframe - arrows -.
CAUTION!
To prevent damage, do not bend the front exhaust pipe decoupling element more than 10°.
- Loosen the clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 - and slide them forward.
- Remove bolt - arrow - at left exhaust tract strap.
- Remove bolt - arrow - at right exhaust tract strap.
- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - A - - arrows -.
- Remove transmission/front driveshaft connecting bolts - arrows -.
- Slide driveshaft back to rear final drive and tie up.
CAUTION!
For the following steps, note:
Do not support on the transmission oil pan or damage could result.
- Install an M12 x 100 bolt - 1 - with a nut - 2 - into the rear mount on the transmission fluid pan.
• - a - = 13 mm
- Position engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) plunger on bolt head as shown in illustration.
- Remove the tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.
- Slightly lower tunnel crossmember with transmission using (V.A.G 1383 A).
• - a - = maximum 40 mm.
• Illustration without right front exhaust pipe, however, it does not have to be removed.
- Remove the four lock washers - 1 -.
• Always replace the lock washers
• There are different versions of the noise or heat insulation - 2 - depending on the vehicle.
- Remove the noise insulation - 2 - and slide it forward or remove it.
- Remove the frame for the selector lever boot - 1 - - arrows -.
- Move the selector lever into D.
- Loosen the screw on the selector lever cable through the opening - arrow - in the selector mechanism one turn using the socket and key (T40031).
• Only loosen the clamping screw - do not remove it.
• The clamping screw is only accessible when the selector lever is in D.
• The selector lever must remain in D when the clamping screw is loose.
- Remove the front center console - 1 -.
- Disconnect the connectors - 2 - and - 4 -.
- Remove the bolts - 1 -, - 3 -, - 5 - and - 6 -.
• A second technician is required when removing the shift mechanism function unit from underneath the vehicle.
- Press the retaining clamps - arrows - inward and lower selector mechanism function unit downward.
- Remove the selector lever cable clip - 1 - sideways.
- Remove the shift mechanism function unit downward and at the same time remove selector lever cable - 2 -.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Shift Mechanism Overview ] Description and Operation
• Lubricate the ball socket on the selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease (G 052 142 A2) before installing.
• Do not bend the selector lever cable.
- Install the tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Overview ] Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Overview.
- Adjusts the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Procedures.
- Attach the driveshaft to the transmission.
- Install the exhaust system making sure it is free of tension.
- Install front crossmember.
- Install front center console.
