Backrest
• Removal and installation are same for right and left.
Removing
• Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Remove front seat:
• Standard and Sport Manual Seat. Refer to => [ Manual Standard Front Seats ] Manual Standard Front Seats.
- Attach front seat to Fixture For Seat Repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136 ] Front Seat, Installing on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136.
- Remove the tunnel side trim. Refer to => [ Trim, Tunnel Side ] Trim, Tunnel Side and sill side trim. Refer to => [ Trim, Sill Side ] Trim, Sill Side.
- Disengage the entry assist cables - 2 - and - 3 - from the retaining plate - 1 - at the seat forward/back adjuster.
- Disengage the cable on the seat forward/back adjustment bolt - arrow -.
- Disengage the release cable - 1 - at the seat rail release idler pulley - 2 -.
- Disconnect the wiring harness connectors for the seat backrest and free up the disconnected wiring harnesses. Refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat.
• The wiring harness between the connector station and the side airbag is continuous.
- Remove the bolts - 2 -.
- Tilt the backrest - 3 - forward onto the seat pan - 1 -.
- Press the seat pan upholstery to the side and carefully remove side airbag wiring harness - 4 - and, if necessary, all additional wiring harness (depending on option equipment) from the seat pan.
- Remove the seat backrest.
Installation
• Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
- Always clean the threaded holes for the self-locking bolts, for example, using a thread tap.
- Replace all self-locking bolts.
- Install the entry assist cable. Refer to => [ Entry Assistance Release Cable A, Adjusting ] Entry Assistance Release Cable A, Adjusting.
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition switched on.
• If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
