Rear Suspension
Drive Axle Assembly Overview, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint and 108 mm Inner CV Joint
1 Cover
• Always replace.
2 Securing Ring
• Remove and install with commercially-available circlip pliers.
• Always replace.
3 Inner CV Joint
• Exterior diameter: 108 mm.
• Replace only as complete unit.
• Checking, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Inner CV Joint, Checking.
• Pressing off, refer to => [ Removing the 108 mm Inner CV Joint ] Overhaul.
• Pressing on, refer to => [ Installing the 108 mm inner CV Joint ] Overhaul.
• Adhesive surface must be free of oil and grease.
• When installing joint on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
4 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Install the clamp on inner joint and clamp it. ] Overhaul.
5 Protective Boot for Inner CV Joint
• Without ventilation bore.
• In case of damage, check inner CV joint. Refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Inner CV Joint, Checking.
• The protective boot/drive shaft sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
6 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Install the clamp on inner joint and clamp it. ] Overhaul.
7 Drive Axle
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.
8 Backing Plate
9 Bolt
• Always replace if removed.
• 70 Nm
10 CV Boot for Outer CV Joint
• Without ventilation bore.
• Check for tears and chafing; replace if necessary.
• in case of damage, check outer CV joint. Refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Outer CV Joint, Checking.
• The protective boot/joint sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
11 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Installing the Tensioning the Clamp on the Outer Joint ] Rear Suspension.
12 Securing Ring
• Always replace.
• Insert before mounting in ring groove (not visible with joint installed).
• Before installing CV joint, align sealing ring in center with opening facing upward.
13 Outer CV Joint
• Exterior diameter: 88 mm or 100 mm.
• Replace only as complete unit.
• Checking, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Outer CV Joint, Checking.
• Driving off, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, 88 mm or 100 mm ] Rear Suspension.
• Installing: Drive onto shaft using plastic hammer until compressed circlip seats.
• Circlip must lie in joint chamfer when guiding in, guide with pliers if necessary.
• When installing joint on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
14 Bolt
• Always replace.
• 200 Nm + 180° turn
• Pay attention the instructions when loosening and tightening. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Outer Joint Collar Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Procedures.
Grease Quantity and Type
Grease joint when replacing CV boot.
• Note that the outer and inner joints use different types of grease.
