Backrest Cover and Upholstery

CAUTION!
For vehicles with side airbags, observe safety precautions for side airbags. Refer to => [ Side Airbag Additional Safety Precautions ] Side Airbag Additional Safety Precautions.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634)

Drill

Protective eye-wear

Drill bit dia. 12 mm





1 Side Fastening Strip

2 Side Airbag Connector

3 Locking Tab

4 Side Airbag On The Driver/Passenger Side

5 Rivet

6 Protective Cover For Side Airbag

7 Bolt

Tightening specification 10 Nm

Replace after each disassembly

8 Cover and Upholstery

Removing

- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.

- Remove the seat. Refer to => [ Power Front Memory Seat ] Power Front Memory Seats.

- Remove on vehicles with a DVD player. Refer to => [ DVD Player Guide, Removing and Installing ].

- Remove the backrest. Refer to => [ Front Backrest ] Power Front Memory Seats.

- Remove headrest. Refer to => [ Headrests with Locking Mechanism ] Power Front Memory Seats.

- Remove headrest guides. Refer to => [ Headrest Guides ] Headrest Guides.

- Remove backrest cover panel. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Power Front Memory Seats.

- Pry out lower grip channels - 12 - (quantity: 3).

- Disengage side fastening strips - 10 - (quantity: 2) and - 11 - (quantity: 2).

- Remove upper fastening strips - 9 - (quantity: 2).

- Remove the side airbag: vehicle through 04.07, refer to => [ Driver and Passenger Side Airbag Igniter, through 04.2007 ] , vehicles from 05.07, refer to => [ Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter from 05.2007 ] Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter from 05.2007.

- Remove wiring harness upward.

- Remove adhesive tape from wiring harness.

- Remove backrest heating cable from backrest frame.

- Remove upholstery with cover.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Be sure to note the following:

- Make sure that airbag cable - 16 - runs through cable guide - 17 - and is secured by clip - 15 - to backrest frame.

- Use (V.A.G 1634) to install new upholstery clips on protective cover for side airbag.

DVD Player Guide, Removing and Installing





Removing

DVD player removed.

- Unclip the trim - 2 - for the connector - arrow -.

- Drill out the guides - 1 - and - 3 - for the DVD player using a 12 mm drill dia.





CAUTION!
Danger of destroying the backrest cover and cushion.

The guides are held in the backrest frame by the retaining tabs - arrows -.

When removing, drill out only up to dimension - a - = 35 mm.

Installation





The guide mounts - 1 - and - 3 - on the backrest must free of contaminants.

- Align the backrest cover and install the guides into the mounts.

The guides - 1 - and - 3 - can be installed in only one position.

The release buttons must face outside.

- Install the trim - 2 -.

The trim can be installed in only one position.

Ignore the - arrow -.

Removing

- Cut the upholstery clips - 3 -.

- Remove cover - 1 -.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Be sure to note the following:

- When installing new upholstery clips, use Upholstery Clip Pliers (V.A.G 1634).
