A - Emptying a fuel tank more than 1/4 filled.
B - Emptying a fuel tank less than 1/4 filled
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Fuel extracting device (VAS 5190)
Procedure
Observe safety precautions. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Fuel Supply System.
Observe rules for cleanliness. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Fuel Supply System.
CAUTION!
Risk of destroying electrical components when battery is disconnected.
• Follow the instructions when disconnecting the battery.
- Switch off ignition.
- Release the fuel tank flap.
Sedan:
- Fold the luggage compartment floor upward.
Wagon:
- Remove luggage compartment cargo floor - 1 - and spare wheel cover - 2 -.
All:
- Release the retaining clips - arrows - with a screwdriver - 2 - and remove the cover - 1 -.
- Disconnect ground (GND) strap at battery ground (GND) terminal - arrow -.
CAUTION!
Risk of explosion due to electrostatic charge.
• Secure the (VAS 5190) ground wire to a bare area of the chassis.
A - Emptying a fuel tank more than 1/4 filled
- Remove the cone piece - 2 - from the shaft piece - 1 - on the (VAS 5190).
- Using insulating tape, apply a mark - arrow - on hose at length - a - = 1,365 mm from end of suction hose.
- Remove fuel filler cap from fuel filler tube.
- Install the shaft piece - 1 - for the (VAS 5190) on the fuel tank filler tube.
- Slide suction hose as far into fuel tank until the mark applied earlier - arrow - stands on shaft piece.
- Empty fuel tank as much as possible via fuel filler tube.
- Carefully pull out the suction hose.
- Remove fuel delivery unit. Refer to => [ Fuel Delivery Unit ] Fuel Delivery Unit.
- Extract the residual fuel in right chamber of fuel tank through the opening of the fuel filler tube.
- Push the hose into the left chamber of the fuel tank and extract the residual fuel.
• If using a siphoning device without shaft piece, proceed principally in the same manner.
• In this case, apply a mark - arrow - using insulating tape on hose at length - a - = 1300 mm from end of suction hose - 1 -. The suction hose is inserted correctly when the marking applied earlier stands opposite the lip of fuel filler tube.
• If the hose can only be inserted with difficulty, coat it thinly with engine oil. Never use lubricants containing silicon.
