Contact Corrosion

Contact Corrosion

General:

Contact corrosion can occur if non-approved fasteners are used on the vehicle (bolts, nuts, washers, etc.).

For this reason, only connecting elements with a special surface coating are installed.

In addition, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive are made of materials that do not conduct electricity.

If you are not sure about the suitability of parts, install new parts.

The following points must be followed specifically for the transmission:

Through approximately 2004, the transmission housing for the Multitronic 01J transmission was made out of magnesium alloy; from 2005 it is made out of aluminum.

Bolts and other components which have direct contact with the transmission have a surface coating which is matched to the transmission housing.

On a magnesium transmission, bolts must always be replaced on the following bolted connections: Transmission cover on the transmission casing and cover for final drive on transmission casing and the connection of the engine to the transmission.

Contact corrosion occurs when incorrect components (bolts, nuts, washers, etc.) are used. The transmission housing will be damaged.

Furthermore, the transmission housing, transmission cover and final drive cover must all be of the same material.

If you are not sure about the suitability of parts, install new parts.

We recommend using original replacement parts only. They have been inspected and are compatible with magnesium.

It is recommended to use Audi accessories.

Damage resulting from contact corrosion is not covered by the warranty.
