Navigation System - Won't Recognize Hyphenated Addresses
91 Street address with hyphens cannot be used as Navigation destination91 12 66
2027686/2
November 6, 2012.
Supersedes Technical Service bulletin Group 91 number 11-15 dated October 5, 2011 for reasons listed below.
Affected Vehicles
Condition
Customer complaint is that street addresses with hyphens (e.g. 27-80) cannot be entered as a Navigation destination. Affected addresses are primarily in the New York, New York and Honolulu, Hawaii areas.
Technical Background
Hyphenated street addresses were converted incorrectly during the navigation data compilation process.
Production Solution
New navigation data compilation.
Service
1. Update the MMI navigation data compilation. For A8 vehicles with RSE the hard drive of both the front and rear Main unit (address word 5F and 7F) will need to be updated.
2. Perform activation of navigation data using SVM.
Tip: The following procedure is similar to the MMI software (Zug) update; however, it does not change the MMI software nor correct any other issue.
Tip: The steps below are not comprehensive and are only intended to highlight differences from a MMI software (Zug) update. Refer to TSB 2028141, 91 Generic instructions for updating MMI3G / MMI3G+ software and navigation data, for more detailed instructions on MMI update procedures. Note however that the instructions are generic and some portions may not apply to this specific TSB (e.g. importing and exporting customer code data is not necessary for this navigation data compilation update).
Update Navigation database compilation - all except A8
1. Connect an approved Audi battery maintainer/charger to vehicle.
2. Switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment (blower, seat heater, interior light, etc.).
Tip: Make sure that no electromagnetic interference sources (mobile phone) are operated in or near the vehicle while individual control units are being updated.
3. Insert the Navigation data SD card into SD slot 1 of the MMI main unit J794 located in the center of the instrument panel (glove box in A6 models).
4. Press the SETUP and RETURN buttons simultaneously and hold both buttons down for about 5 seconds to enter the Engineering menu.
5. Once in the Engineering menu press the lower right MMI softkey to select UPDATE.
6. Select SD 1 when prompted.
7. Select using the MMI control knob
8. Start the update. The data transfer may take up to 2 hours (the update will continue automatically and does not require user intervention during this time).
9. Once the data transfer is complete, confirm the "Abort documentation" selection. The 3G MMI system will restart.
10. Connect a VAS diagnostic tool with an online connection to the vehicle to perform the Navigation data activation using the appropriate activation document as listed in the Required Parts and Tools section below.
11. Using the Audi Flashing function select and run the SVM - Activations test plan. A valid GeKo ID will be needed. A valid activation code, activation number and PIN code from the Activation document will also be entered during the test plan.
12. It is imperative the vehicle is not returned to the customer without performing the navigation data activation as the Navigation system will become unusable as the navigation data will be blocked.
Tip: Remember to remove the SD card from the vehicle.
Update Navigation database compilation - A8
For A8 vehicles the above instructions can be followed with a few exceptions as noted below.
1. Follow steps 1-3 from above.
2. Press the BACK and TONE buttons on the front control panel E380 simultaneously and hold both buttons down for about 5 seconds to enter the Engineering menu.
3. For A8 without RSE follow steps 5-12 above. For A8 with RSE follow steps 5-9 from above then proceed below.
4. Remove the Navigation data SD card from the front MMI main unit J794 and insert it into SD slot 1 of the rear MMI main unit J829, located behind the cover between the rear seatbacks.
5. Press the BACK and MENU buttons on the rear control panel E499 simultaneously and hold both buttons down for about 5 seconds to enter the Engineering menu.
6. Follow steps 5-9 from above to update the rear hard drive as was previously done with the front hard drive, then proceed below.
7. Once the update of both hard drives is complete follow steps 10-12 from above to activate the Navigation data. Both front and rear hard drives will be activated using the test plan - it will only need to be run once.
