5 Coolant Shut-Off Valve

Depending on the engine, the shut-off valve is installed in the coolant feed and return line from the engine to the A/C heater core.

- The shut-off valve is currently installed only in vehicles having a 4- or 6-cylinder gasoline engine.

The vacuum from the Climatronic refrigerant shut-off valve (N422) activates the shut-off valve on start-of-production vehicles.

On certain vehicles (depending on the engine), vacuum-controlled coolant shut-off valves were installed on vehicles without an "auxiliary heater" from start of production. Shut-off valves that are controlled directly were installed later as a running change. Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

This valve is referred to as a Climatronic refrigerant shut-off valve (N422) or a coolant shut-off valve (N82) depending on the engine version and on the time of production. Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

Allocation of the coolant shut-off valve and of the Climatronic refrigerant shut-off valve (N422) on the engine or inside the plenum chamber, refer to => [ Climatronic Refrigerant Shut-Off Valve (N422)/Coolant Shut-Off Valve (N82) Location, Control and Function ] Climatronic Refrigerant Shut-Off Valve (N422)/Coolant Shut-Off Valve (N82) Location, Control and Function.

The Climatronic refrigerant shut-off valve (N422) / coolant shut-off valve (N82) is not installed in all versions with a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine. Installation on vehicles without an "auxiliary heater" depends also on the market.

7 Outside Air Temperature Sensor (G17)

The measured value of the outside air temperature sensor is evaluated by the vehicle electrical system control module (J519) and is transmitted via the Data bus to the Climatronic control module (J255) display and control head. Check using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

If there is a complaint due to an excessive measured value on the outside air temperature sensor refer to => [ Outside Air Temperature Sensor (G17) ] Outside Air Temperature Sensor (G17).

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Outside Air Temperature Sensor (G17) ] Outside Air Temperature Sensor (G17).

8 Coolant Fan (V7) and Coolant Fan 2 (V177)

Different versions of the Coolant Fan and Coolant Fan 2 are installed depending on vehicle equipment. Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

The request to switch on the coolant fan is sent by the Climatronic Control Module (J255) via the Data bus system to the engine control module. The engine control module then activates the fans (coolant fan and coolant fan 2) directly or via the coolant fan control module (J293).

Check the coolant fan control by the Climatronic control module (J255). Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

The respective engine control modules switches, for example, the Coolant Fan and Coolant Fan 2 (directly or via the Coolant Fan Control (FC)Control Module (J293) ) continuously to the desired output (depending on engine type). Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

9 Air Quality Sensor (G238) / Humidity Sensor In Fresh Air Intake Duct (G657)

Different version, refer to Parts Catalog.

There are different versions depending on the vehicle date of manufacture and which A/C system ("Basis" or "Comfort") is installed. The "Basis" A/C system does not have a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct / air quality sensor until the MY 12 change-over. From MY 12 it has a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct without an air quality sensor (black housing). Through MY 12, the "Comfort" A/C system has an air quality sensor without a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct. From MY 12, it has a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct with an air quality sensor, (brown housing).

Vehicles with the "Comfort" A/C system have an air quality sensor without a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct (from start of production up the change-over). Refer to => [ Climatronic Control Module (J255) A/C Control Head Allocation ] Climatronic Control Module (J255) A/C Control Head Allocation and to the Parts Catalog.

Beginning with the MY 12 Audi A4 and Audi 5, the vehicle version was changed-over as a running change. Refer to => [ Climatronic Control Module (J255) A/C Control Head Allocation ] Climatronic Control Module (J255) A/C Control Head Allocation. Vehicles, built before the change-over and with the "Comfort" A/C system, have an air quality sensor (not on the "Basis"). Vehicles built since this change-over (and on the Audi Q5 Hybrid): if the vehicle has the "Basis" A/C system, then it has a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct; if the vehicle has the "Comfort" A/C system, then it has a humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct and an air quality sensor.

Function, refer to => [ Air Quality Sensor (G238) and Humidity Sensor in Fresh Air Intake Duct (G657) Function ] Description and Operation.

Checking, refer to => [ Air Quality Sensor (G238)/Humidity Sensor in Fresh Air Intake Duct (G657), Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Air Quality Sensor (G238)/Humidity Sensor in Fresh Air Intake Duct (G657) ] Service and Repair.

The vehicle electrical system control module (J519) evaluates the measurement from the air quality sensor / humidity sensor in fresh air intake duct and then transmits it to the Climatronic control module via the Data bus. The Climatronic control module switches to recirculating air mode when requested, for example, if there are no shut-off conditions present. Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

10 Fresh Air Intake With Intake Grille

Check cowl panel trim with the cover for the fresh air intake for correct installation and damage. Check the seals between the fresh air intake cover, the cowl panel trim and the window cross member for damage and proper fit. This seals prevent water from entering between window cross member and cover and running into A/C unit air intake shroud

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Fresh Air Intake ] Fresh Air Intake.

Make sure the intake grille fits correctly. The intake grille prevents foreign objects such as leaves from getting into the A/C intake shroud.

Depending on the version, for some countries with high dust levels (for example China), a filter id installed instead of intake air grille, which prevents dust and sand from entering the fresh air blower. Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

The fresh air intake shaft may have an additional cover with a rain water drain channel depending on the version of the vehicle and the plenum chamber cover installed. Refer to => [ Fresh Air Intake ] Fresh Air Intake.

11 Forced Air Extractor

A forced air extraction vent is installed at left and right under rear bumper.

Sealing doors on air extraction vent must be able to move freely and close automatically.

In order for the passenger compartment ventilation to function properly, the air ducts that run through the luggage compartment trim must be unobstructed.

Checking, refer to => [ Passenger Compartment Forced Air Extraction ] Service and Repair.
