Backrest Adjustment Motor and Switch Unit

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Locking compound, refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

Removing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

Before handling airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the harness connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Remove the front seat:

Standard seat, Sport seat (power) and Comfort seat. Refer to => [ Power Standard Front Seat ] Power Standard Front Seat.

Super Sport seat. Refer to => [ Super Sport Front Seat ] Super Sport Front Seat.

- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on the ] Front Seat, Installing on the Fixture For Seat Repair (VAS 6136).

- Remove the tunnel side trim => [ Trim, Tunnel Side ] Trim, Tunnel Side.

- Remove the sill side trim => [ Trim, Sill Side ] Trim, Sill Side.

- Remove backrest cover panel. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Backrest Cover.

- Make a permanent mark (a line) on the left and right side - arrow A - on the backrest frame - 2 - on the front edge - arrow B - of the anchor - 1 -.






Do not damage the surface of the anchor when marking it by scratching or denting it.

Do not remove the cover - 4 - under any circumstances.

- Remove the nut - 5 - from the shaft - 3 -.

- Remove the upholstery on the backrest. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover and Upholstery ] Backrest Cover and Upholstery.

Backrest Adjustment Motor, Removing





The switch unit must be removed to remove the backrest adjustment motor - 7 - but it does not need to be replaced.

- Remove the switch unit. Refer to => [ Switch Unit, Removing ].

- Remove the shaft - 3 - in the direction of the - arrow - from the backrest frame - 1 -.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 6 - on the backrest adjustment motor - 7 -.

- Remove the bolt - 2 -.

- Remove the bracket adjustment motor - 7 - from the bracket - 5 -.

Switch Unit, Removing





- Remove the shaft - 5 - in the direction of the - arrow - from the switch unit - 2 -.

- Disconnect the multi-pin connector - 5 -.






- Remove the bolts - 2 -.

- Remove the switch unit - 4 - from the backrest frame - 1 -.

- Unclip the locking bushing - 2 - at the spindle - 1 -.






3 Switch unit

Installing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

Before handling airbag units (for example, when connecting the harness connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Clean the shaft threads - 3 - before installing, for example using a thread tap.






- Check the position of the backrest frame - 2 - and the anchor - 1 - on the left and right side.

The left and right backrest frames must be in the position marked before removal - A and B arrows -.

- If the left and right backrest frames are not in the position marked before removal, correct their position accordingly.

Backrest Adjustment Motor, Installing





- Position the backrest adjustment motor - 1 - on the bracket - 3 -.

- Replace the bolt - 4 -. Coat it with locking compound fluid and tighten it by hand. Refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

It must still be possible to move the backrest adjustment motor.

- First slide the shaft through the anchor (tunnel side) as far as the stop - 2 - in the backrest adjustment motor.

- Check whether the profile of the inserted shaft and mount - 2 - in the backrest adjustment motor align.

If the shaft profile and the mount in the backrest adjustment motor align:

- Slide the shaft through the mount in the backrest adjustment motor up to approximately the middle of the seat.

If the shaft profile and the mount in the backrest adjustment motor do not align:

- Connect an external power source (12 Volt) to the backrest adjustment motor - 1 -.

- Rotate mount - 2 - until it aligns with the shaft profile.

- Slide the shaft through the mount in the backrest adjustment motor up to approximately the middle of the seat.

- Install the switch unit. Refer to => [ Switch Unit, Installing ].

Switch Unit, Installing





- Insert the switch unit - 4 - so the guide - arrow - covers the backrest frame - 1 - correctly.

- Tighten the switch unit - 4 - to the tightening specification.

- Connect the socket - 5 - to the switch unit multi-pin connector.

- Position the locking bushing - 4 - on the shaft - 3 -.






The catches - arrow - (quantity: 4) on the locking bushing must face toward the switch unit - 1 -.

When sliding the shaft in, do not engage the locking bushing - 4 - with the spindle - 2 -.

Only engage the locking bushing - 4 - after adjusting the switch unit with the spindle - 2 -.

Backrest Adjustment Motor and Switch Unit, Installing

- Slide the shaft - 3 - through the spindle - 2 - and the anchor (sill side) as far as the stop.

- Apply locking compound to the threaded section of the shaft. Refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

- Install the new nut - 5 - on the shaft - 3 -.






- Tighten the bolt - 5 - to the specified torque.

- Bolt the backrest adjustment motor on the bracket - 3 - and tighten it to the tightening specification.






- Adjust the switch unit micro switch - 2 -. Refer to => [ Switch Unit Micro-Switch, Adjusting ] Switch Unit Micro-Switch, Adjusting.






- After adjusting the switch unit, slide the locking bushing - 4 - onto the spindle - 3 -.

- Engage the locking bushing - 4 - with the spindle - 3 -.

- Check the switch unit. Refer to => [ Switch Unit Micro-Switch, Checking ] Switch Unit Micro-Switch, Checking.

Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the vehicle diagnostic tester.

- Perform the following tests after removing and installing the backrest adjustment motor and the switch unit:
