Rear Seat Backrest







Rear Seat Backrest

Removing and installing the right 2/3 split rear backrest is described. It is similar for the left 1/3 backrest.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Trim removal wedge (3409)

Removing

- Remove rear seat bench. Refer to => [ Rear Bench Seat ] Rear Bench Seat.

- Right rear seat backrest 2/3: remove the rear center belt end fitting.

Right rear seat backrest 2/3, country-specific with rear seat belt igniter:

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storing, Transporting and Disposing ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storing, Transporting and Disposing.

- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.








Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Disconnect electrical connectors.

- Pull the retainer - 1 - in the - direction of arrow - and disconnect electrical connectors - 2 - and - 3 -.

Vehicles with backrest release:






- Open coupling rod cover - 1 -.

- Unclip the release cable - 4 - at the coupling rod - 2 - for the release cable - arrow -.

- Remove the release cable nipple - 3 -.

All vehicles:






- Fold the backrest forward.

- Remove the screw - 2 - from the securing bracket.

- If the vehicle has a pass-through door, open the door and remove the securing bracket - 1 - from the center support - arrow -.

The cushion and cover are not shown in the illustration.

- Vehicles with backrest heating: disconnect the connector from the backrest heating.






- Lift the rear seat backrest - 2 - out of the center support - 3 - and pull it out toward the center of the vehicle out of its outer mounts - 1 - - arrows -.

- Remove rear seat backrest from the vehicle.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Right rear seat backrest 2/3, country-specific with rear seat belt igniter:

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

When working on vehicles with the ignition turned on or where the engine has been started, there is a risk of unintentional engine start and of being poisoned by gas in closed areas. There is a risk of clothes and body parts being pulled or getting stuck.

Perform the following steps before turning on the ignition:

Move the selector lever into P.

Activate the parking brake

Turn the ignition off.

Open the hood.

Connect the charger unit i.e., battery charger (VAS 5095A) to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system.

Switch the ignition on.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.
