Side Airbag Crash Sensor G179/G180

Driver thorax airbag crash sensor (G179) / Front passenger thorax airbag crash sensor (G180)

Removing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

Follow the safety precautions for front side airbag crash sensors (pressure sensors). Refer to => [ Front Side Airbag Crash Sensors (Pressure Sensors) Safety Precautions ] Front Side Airbag Crash Sensors (Pressure Sensors) Safety Precautions.

- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.

- Remove the door trim panel. Refer to => [ Front Door Trim Panel ] Front Door Trim Panel.

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Pull out connector lock - 5 - - arrow - and press down, disconnect harness connector - 4 - at the crash sensor.

- Remove the bolts - 1 -, - 3 - and the side airbag crash sensors - 2 -.

Installation

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

Follow the safety precautions for front side airbag crash sensors (pressure sensors). Refer to => [ Front Side Airbag Crash Sensors (Pressure Sensors) Safety Precautions ] Front Side Airbag Crash Sensors (Pressure Sensors) Safety Precautions.

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

For proper crash sensor (pressure sensor) function, ensure door does not leak.

All components (for example, cover, speaker, door trim) must be installed correctly.

The door trim clips seal the system closed. Replace the clips if necessary.

Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

When working on vehicles with the ignition turned on or where the engine has been started, there is a risk of unintentional engine start and of being poisoned by gas in closed areas. There is a risk of clothes and body parts being pulled or getting stuck.

Perform the following steps before turning on the ignition:

Move the selector lever into P.

Activate the parking brake

Turn the ignition off.

Open the hood.

Connect the charger unit i.e., battery charger (VAS 5095A) to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system.

Switch the ignition on.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.
