Wheel Bearing Housing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench 40 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)

Grease

Removing

- Remove the rear wheel.

- Disconnect the connector - 2 - from the rear speed sensor.






- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the bracket with the wires from the wheel bearing housing.

Secure the removed brake caliper to the body so that the weight of the caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose or brake line.

Do not press the brake pedal whenever the brake caliper is removed.

- Remove the brake caliper and the brake rotor then guide the brake rotor past the suspension and secure it to the body.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the rear speed sensor - 2 -.






Vehicles with Steel Suspension:

- Remove coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Rear Suspension.

Vehicles with Air Suspension:

- Remove air spring. Refer to => [ Air Spring ] Rear Suspension.

All Vehicles






- Mark the installed position of the adjusting screw - 1 - to the wheel bearing housing - 2 -.

- Remove the nut - 4 - and the shim - 3 -.

- Remove the adjusting screw.

- Remove bolt - 4 -.






- Remove the bolt - arrow - and the washer between the wheel bearing housing and the shock absorber.






- Remove the nut - 3 -.






- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the spacer - 2 -.

- Remove the wheel bearing housing.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing and Wheel Bearing Unit Overview, FWD ] Wheel Bearing Housing and Wheel Bearing Unit Overview, FWD.

Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension bolts when vehicle is in curb weight or control position.

Wheel bearing, lifting into curb weight position, vehicles with steel suspension, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, with Coil Spring, Lifting into Curb Weight Position ] Description and Operation.

For vehicles with air spring suspension, lift wheel suspension in control position, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, with Air Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position ] Rear Suspension.

- Install wheel bearing housing.

- Insert the bolt - 1 - with the spacer tube - 2 - and install the nut - 3 - loosely.






Do not tighten the threaded connection using the nut - 3 -.

- Tighten the bolt - 1 -.

- Install the spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Rear Suspension or => [ Air Spring ] Rear Suspension.

- Install the brake caliper and brake disc.

- Install the tie rod. Refer to => [ Tie Rod ] Rear Suspension.

- Install the upper transverse link. Refer to => [ Upper Transverse Link ] Upper Transverse Link.

- Install the lower transverse link. Refer to => [ Lower Transverse Link ] Lower Transverse Link.

- Install the rear speed sensor.

- Install the rear wheel.

- Axle alignment is required, see table. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.

The axle alignment must be performed on a VW/Audi approved alignment stand.
