Front Airbag Crash Sensor G283/G284

Driver front airbag crash sensor (G283) / front passenger front airbag crash sensor (G284)

Removing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

There is a risk of getting injured by an automatic engine start for vehicles with the start/stop system.

For vehicles with an activated start/stop system (recognized by a signal in the instrument cluster), the engine can be started automatically if need be.

Therefore make sure that the start/stop system is deactivated when working on the vehicle (turn off the ignition, turn on the ignition when necessary).

- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.

- Remove the headlamp housing. .

Vehicles with a charge air cooler installed on the side:

- Removing charge air cooler.

Vehicles with with a left cooler for the charge air cooling circuit:

- Remove the left charge air cooling circuit cooler.

All vehicles:

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.

- Pull down connector lock - 4 - to remove - arrow - and press down, disconnect harness connector - 3 - at the crash sensor.

- Remove bolt - 1 - and front airbag crash sensor - 2 -.

Installing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

When working on vehicles with the ignition turned on or where the engine has been started, there is a risk of unintentional engine start and of being poisoned by gas in closed areas. There is a risk of clothes and body parts being pulled or getting stuck.

Perform the following steps before turning on the ignition:

Move the selector lever into P.

Activate the parking brake

Turn the ignition off.

Open the hood.

Connect the charger unit i.e., battery charger (VAS 5095A) to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system.

Switch the ignition on.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again Vehicle diagnostic tester.

Installation note: For example tightening specifications, replace components. Refer to => [ Airbag Crash Sensors ] Description and Operation.
