Separating

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

- Bring/move headrest into the lowest position.

- Move the front seat all the way to the rear and then into its highest position.

- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.

- Unclip cover - 1 - in the front using the trim removal wedge (3409) and remove cover in - direction of arrow - from the connector station - 2 -.

- Remove wiring bracket - 3 - at the top from the connector station by releasing retaining tabs.

The number of connectors may vary depending on equipment.

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.

- Disconnect side airbag electrical harness connector - 1 - by releasing retaining tabs.

- Connect airbag adapter connector (VAS 6282) to the side airbag harness connector. Refer to => [ Connecting Airbag Adapter VAS 6282 ] Connecting Airbag Adapter VAS 6282.

- Versions with heated seats: Disconnect seat heater electrical harness connector - 2 - releasing retaining tabs.

- Disconnect seat heater voltage supply electrical harness connector - 4 - by releasing retaining tabs.

- Disconnect belt latch electrical harness connector - 5 - by releasing retaining tabs.

Connection

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.

Connecting the electrical wiring harnesses happens in reverse order, noting the following:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

When working on vehicles with the ignition turned on or where the engine has been started, there is a risk of unintentional engine start and of being poisoned by gas in closed areas. There is a risk of clothes and body parts being pulled or getting stuck.

Perform the following steps before turning on the ignition:

Move the selector lever into P.

Activate the parking brake

Turn the ignition off.

Open the hood.

Connect the charger unit i.e., battery charger (VAS 5095A) to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system.

Switch the ignition on.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.
