Upper Control Arm
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Wheel Hub Support (T10149)
• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)
• Ring Spanner Insert, 16 mm (V.A.G 1331/12)
• Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)
• Vehicle Diagnostic Tester with diagnostic cable
Removing
- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Remove the tower brace. Refer to => [ Tower Brace ] Front Suspension.
- Remove wheel trim cap, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).
- Remove the wheel.
- Secure the brake disc with a wheel bolt.
- Remove the bolt - 1 -.
- Remove the bolt - 3 -.
- Remove the brake line and wires from the bracket on the wheel bearing housing.
- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on top.
- Install the (T10149) - 1 - with wheel bolt on wheel hub.
- Support wheel bearing housing over the (T10149) with (V.A.G 1383 A).
• Do not lift or lower the vehicle if the engine/transmission holder is below it.
• Do not leave the engine/transmission holder under the vehicle longer than is necessary.
- Remove the bolt - 1 -.
The slits in the wheel bearing housing must not be widened using a chisel or similar tool!
- Remove booth joint pins in the upper control arm - 2 - from the wheel bearing housing.
• Do not lower wheel bearing housing more than necessary.
- Remove the nut - arrows - and swivel the air spring damper downward and out of the suspension strut tower.
The air spring damper remains inside the vehicle.
• Be careful not to damage any components.
- Remove the bolt - 4 and 3 - and remove the front upper control arm and the rear upper control arm.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Air Spring Damper, Shock Absorber Fork, Upper Control Arm and Tower Brace Overview ] Air Spring Damper, Shock Absorber Fork, Upper Control Arm and Tower Brace Overview
• Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension bolts when vehicle is in curb weight or control position. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts ] Front Suspension.
- Insert the upper control arm and the bolt - 4 and 3 - hand-tight.
- Insert both of the upper control arm joint pins - 2 - in the wheel bearing housing and insert the bolt - 1 -.
- Install the air spring damper into the suspension strut tower and tighten the nuts - arrows -.
- Install the threaded connector - 3 - but do not tighten it.
- Tighten the threaded connection - 1 -.
• Push the upper control arms down as far as possible while tightening the bolts!
- Lift wheel bearing in control position. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts ] Front Suspension.
• Push the upper control arm toward the inside of the vehicle when tighten the bolt - 3 - or - 4 -.
- Tighten the bolt - 4 or 3 -.
- Tighten the rest of the threaded connections.
- Mount wheel and tighten.
- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Axle alignment is required. Refer to => [ When Vehicle Alignment is Necessary ] When Vehicle Alignment is Necessary.
