Upper Transverse Link
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1332)
• Due to the inaccessibility of the inner threaded connection - 1 -, the upper transverse link can only be removed when the subframe has been removed.
Removing
- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Remove the wheels.
- Remove subframe. Refer to => [ Subframe with Attachments ] Service and Repair.
- Mark the eccentric washer on the threaded connection on the wheel bearing housing - 2 - with a felt-tip pen.
- Separate connections - 1 and 2 -.
- Remove upper transverse link - 3 -.
Installing
• Replace the bolts and the self-locking nuts.
Installation position of the transverse link to the subframe.
- Install the upper transverse link - 3 - on the threaded connection - 1 - by hand.
- Lay a ruler or straight edge - 1 - flat against the upper control arm - arrows -.
- Position the upper transverse link - 2 - so dimension a = 8 mm +/- 1 mm between the straight edge - 1 - and the stamping burr on the transverse link - 2 -.
- Tighten the upper transverse link - 3 - on the subframe in this position.
- Screw wheel bearing housing on transverse link and tighten new nut to 20 Nm. Note the installation position of the centering washer - 2 -.
- Install subframe. Refer to => [ Subframe with Attachments ] Service and Repair.
- Loosen nut - 4 -.
- Lift the wheel bearing into the control position. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts ] Rear Suspension and tighten the nut - 4 -.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Upper Transverse Link, Tie Rod, Lower Control Arm and Level Control System Sensor Overview ] Upper Transverse Link, Tie Rod, Lower Control Arm and Level Control System Sensor Overview
- Tighten the wheel.
- Perform an axle alignment. Refer to => [ When Vehicle Alignment is Necessary ] When Vehicle Alignment is Necessary.
The axle alignment must be performed on a VW/Audi approved alignment stand.
