Side Curtain Airbag, Servicing







Driver Side and Passenger Side Curtain Airbag Igniter N251 and N252

Removing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and General Information ] Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and General Information.

Note the additional safety precautions when working on the side curtain airbag. Refer to => [ Head Curtain Airbag, Additional Safety Precautions ] Head Curtain Airbag, Additional Safety Precautions.

Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.

- Remove headliner. Refer to => [ Headliner Overview ] Locations.

- Turn on the ignition.

- Turn on the ignition and disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Before handling airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the harness connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Unlock connector lock with a small screwdriver - 2 -.






- Remove connector - 1 - from gas generator - 3 -.

- Remove side curtain airbag screws => [ (Item 3) Bolt ] Side Curtain Airbag Assembly Overview (beginning at rear).

- Remove screws - 3 - for gas generator - 1 - on roof frame - 2 -.






- Remove cap nut - 4 - from ground bolt.

- Unclip locating pins - 1 - on retainer straps - 3 - for side curtain airbag - 2 - from body.






- Remove the side curtain airbag - 2 - from the vehicle.

Installation

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and General Information ] Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and General Information.

Note the additional safety precautions when working on the side curtain airbag. Refer to => [ Head Curtain Airbag, Additional Safety Precautions ] Head Curtain Airbag, Additional Safety Precautions.

Always follow side curtain airbag installation procedure.

Replace self-locking nuts and screws when assembling.

Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)

Before handling airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the harness connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Engage side curtain airbag - 1 - on ground bolt and tighten cap nut - 4 - by hand.






- Tighten the bolts - 3 - for the gas generator - 1 - on the roof frame - 2 - to the tightening specification in the following sequence: - A, B and C -.

- Tighten cap nut - 4 - on ground bolt to the tightening specification.

- Start by clipping and bolting curtain airbag at A-pillar and work toward D-pillar.

- Place connector - 1 - on gas generator - 3 -.






- Lock connector - 1 - with connector lock - 2 -.

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Make sure the wires do not get caught.

- Install headliner => [ Headliner Overview ] Locations.

Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. Maintain personal safety when connecting the battery by staying out of airbag deployment areas, keeping a distance from belt tensioners/seat belts and ensuring no other people are in the vehicle interior at the moment when the battery is connected.

- Switch on ignition.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.

- If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to vehicle diagnostic tester.
