Front Backrest
• Removal and installation is described for the driver seat. Removal and installation of the passenger seat is similar.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Trim Removal Wedge (3409)
Removing
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) cable from the battery.
- Remove the front seat:
• Standard seat and Sport seat (manual). Refer to => [ Manual Standard Front Seat ] Manual Standard Front Seat.
- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on the ] Front Seat, Installing on the Fixture For Seat Repair (VAS 6136).
- Remove the tunnel side trim. Refer to => [ Trim, Tunnel Side ] Trim, Tunnel Side
- Remove the sill side trim. Refer to => [ Trim, Sill Side ] Trim, Sill Side
- Press the entry assistance release cables - 1 - and - 3 - out of the retaining plate - 2 - at the seat rail release.
- Disengage the release cable - 3 - from the seat rail release - arrow -.
- Disengage the release cable - 1 - at the seat rail release idler pulley - 2 -.
- Using the trim removal wedge (3409) , unclip the wiring harness - 1 - in the corrugated tube - 2 - at the bottom side of the seat pan and remove the wiring bracket.
- Disconnect all the wiring harness connectors to the backrest and free up the disconnected wiring harnesses.
• The wiring harness between the connection point and the side airbag is continuous.
- Remove the bolts - 2 -.
- Tip backrest - 3 - forward onto seat pan - 1 -.
- Press the seat pan upholstery to the side and carefully remove side airbag wiring harness - 4 - and, if necessary, all additional wiring harnesses (depending on equipment) from the seat pan.
- Remove backrest.
Installing
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Adjust the entry assistance release cables. Refer to:

- => [ Entry Assistance Release Cable A, Adjusting ] Entry Assistance Release Cable A, Adjusting
• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect the battery ground (GND) cable with the ignition turned on.
• If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
