Distributor: Service and Repair

1. Mark position of No. 1 plug wire contact on distributor body, then remove distributor cap.
2. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke, with damper timing mark aligned with pointer and rotor contact pointing toward No. 1 cylinder plug wire contact.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable to prevent crankshaft from being rotated with distributor removed.
4. Disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connectors noting position for installation.
5. Loosen hold down and remove distributor, noting rotor rotation as distributor is withdrawn. Due to bevel design of distributor drive gears, rotor contact will move approximately 30° as distributor is removed.
6. Ensure that crankshaft has not been rotated, then move rotor contact to position noted during removal.
7. Install distributor and ensure that rotor contact points toward No. 1 cylinder plug wire when distributor is fully seated.
8. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, then check and adjust ignition timing.
