Subject: IDLE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM

Models: 1982/83 528e, 633Csi, 733i 1983 533i

An electronically regulated idle speed control was introduced with the 1982 model year 528e, 633CSi, and 733i. This "first generation" system was continued into the beginning of the 1983 model year 528e, 533i, 633CSi, and 733i.

A "second generation" idle speed control system was GRADUALLY PHASED INTO PRODUCTION on the above models beginning in February 1983.

THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE AND IDLE CONTROL UNIT MUST BE MATCHED BY GENERATION AND NOT MIXED. THE FIRST GENERATION VALVE SHOULD ONLY BE USED WITH THE FIRST GENERATION CONTROL UNIT. THE SECOND GENERATION VALVE SHOULD ONLY BE USED WITH THE SECOND GENERATION CONTROL UNIT.

The correct useage (and means of identification) of the valve and control unit are shown on the attached charts.
The BMW of North America Parts Department will supply only the second generation components. Therefore, when replacing an idle control unit or idle control valve, use the chart to ensure the units are "matched".

Note: To recalibrate the throttle set screw after major engine repairs, refer to Technical Reference Information Bulletin 11 02 83 (2009), page 3.
