This Service Information Bulletin supersedes S.I. 13 16 85 (1131). Please remove and discard S.I. 13 16 85 (1131) from your S.I. binder.

SUBJECT: Use of Constant Current Generator

MODEL: 318i, 325e, 528e equipped with adjustable, all-metal control valve

Conditions: Idle of vehicles equipped with adjustable, all-metal idle control valve cannot be adjusted to specifications as outlined in S.I.'s 13 09 86 (1179) and 13 10 86 (1184).

Correction: If the above condition is experienced, although the engine meets all requirements preceding the adjustments for idle and idle control valve current as outlined in S.I.'s 13 09 86 (1179) and 13 10 86 (1184), use the Constant Current Generator as a DIAGNOSTIC TOOL to determine whether the Idle Control Valve or the Idle Control Unit is faulty, per the following procedure.

CAUTION DO NOT USE THE CONSTANT CURRENT GENERATOR FOR FINAL ADJUSTMENT OF THE IDLE VALVE!

Procedure: ^ Disconnect plug on idle control valve.

^ Connect current generator plug to idle control valve.

^ Connect current generator leads to car battery.
^ Set current generator switch to 160Hz (318i), or 140Hz (325e, 528e).

^ Run engine at idle speed.

^ Turn the adjustment screw on the side of the idle control valve clockwise (completely closed).

^ Slowly open the adjustment screw by turning counterclockwise until the nominal RPM range is reached:

750 +/- 50 RPM = 318iA 850 +/- 50 RPM = 318i 700 +/- 50 RPM = 325e/528e

- If this RPM range can be reached, change the idle control unit.
- If this RPM range cannot be reached, change the idle control valve.

^ Stop the engine.

^ Disconnect current generator leads from battery and plug from idle control valve.

^ Replace the defective part (idle control unit or idle control valve).

^ Readjust engine RPM, CO and idle control valve current with the digital multimeter and procedures as outlined in '86 Gasoline Engine Campaign Bulletins, i.e. 13 09 86 (1179) and 13 10 86 (1184).

NOTE: DO NOT USE CONSTANT CURRENT GENERATOR FOR FINAL ADJUSTMENT OF ENGINE RPM, CO, AND/OR IDLE CONTROL VALVE CURRENT.

ONLY THE MULTIMETER GIVES YOU AN EXACT ADJUSTMENT.

Status: Since use of the Constant Current Generator is a diagnostic aid and not a repair, there is no Defect Code or Labor Flat Rate information that applies to this procedure. Labor is included in the labor allowances of the '86 Gasoline Engine Campaign.
