The purpose of the emission control system is to reduce or eliminate the harmful components in the exhaust gas and other emissions and to prevent contamination of the environment.

With the use of a three-way catalyst which reduces and oxides, the fuel/air ratio must be given in a manner that a reaction balance exists between the exhaust gas and the oxygen. This small range can only be kept with the so-called Lambda control.
