SUBJECT: Installation of Purge Control Module Kit

MODELS: 533i, 633CSi, 733i

Condition: Car difficult to drive off and/or hesitation under acceleration in high ambient temperatures.

Cause: Excess purging of charcoal canister at initial throttle opening.

Correction: Installation of the Purge Control Module which limits the amount of purge until a sufficient airflow has been established.

Procedure: For all steps to follow, refer to the drawing below (Figure 1) and the wiring schematic (Figure 2).
1. Check if a diode is installed in the wiring to the purge valve relay.

Since 12/83 all 3.2 liter vehicles have a factory installed diode. On 633CSi and 733i, the diode is installed underneath the harness of the purge relay, on 533i on the engine harness.

Remove the diode and insulate the remaining wires with tape (DO NOT CONNECT THE WIRES TOGETHER!).

On cars prior to 12/83, a field fix diode might be installed between the purge valve relay socket and the throttle butterfly switch.

Remove the diode and the wires by detaching the 3M quick connectors underneath the purge valve relay socket and on the throttle butterfly switch connector plug. Insulate the remaining wires, where the 3M connectors have pierced the insulation, with electric tape.

2. Remove the plug of the engine harness from the airflow meter.

3. Attach the corresponding connectors of the kit harness to the connector of the engine harness and to the connector of the airflow meter.

4. Connect the brown ground wire of the kit harness to the bolt at the intake manifold, where the other ground wires of the engine harness are connected.

FIGURE 3 (SHOWN 733i):

5. Route the new harness in the direction of the fusebox and secure it with nylon tie straps to the existing harness. For 733i route it additionally along the rubber hose going to the purge valve, as shown in Figure 3.
6. Remove the purge valve relay from its socket and discard it.

7. Remove the socket of the purge valve relay from the fusebox.

8. Remove the green/brown wire (terminal 85) from the socket, insulate it with the supplied insulator and connect it to the diode connector of the kit harness.

If a five connector pulsed relay had been installed, remove the cable from center terminal 31 of the socket and remove the cable's 8 mm diameter ring connector from main ground point on the front left fenderwell.

THIS CABLE WILL NOT BE USED ANY MORE! DISCARD IT!

9. Connect the green/brown wire of the kit harness to terminal 85 of the relay socket.

10. Reinstall the socket to its original place onto the fusebox.

11. Remove the fuel pump relay from its socket and install it into the socket of the purge valve relay. (A new fuel pump relay is provided in the PCM Kit).

12. Remove the fuel pump relay socket from the fusebox and insert the connector of the green/violet wire of the kit harness to the unused, center terminal (87b of the new fuel pump relay) of the relay socket.

13. Reinstall the socket to its original place onto the fusebox.

14. Install the new fuel pump relay (5 pins) provided in the kit (P/N 61 31 1 373 911) in its socket.

15. Install the new purge control module socket (part of the harness) onto the unused receptacle of the fusebox.

16. Insert the new purge control module (4 pins) into its socket.

17. Make sure that all cables are properly installed and connected.

Warranty
Status: 1) Reimbursement for the complete repair outlined in this bulletin will be provided through normal Warranty claim processing with no limitation on age or mileage of the affected vehicle, only when this repair is performed in conjunction with and within the limits described in the BMW "86 ENGINE CAMPAIGN", and the repair is performed on or before May 31, 1987.

The "complete repair" must use the following special defect code and labor operation number:

Defect Code: 00 00 99 07 00
Labor Allowance: 3 FRU Operation # 00 50 520

2) Any repairs or adjustments which are found to be necessary while performing the repairs outlined, but which are not included in this bulletin, will be covered under the terms of the applicable BMW Warranty only.

3) If a component installed as part of the "complete repair" requires subsequent (later) replacement, the required repair will be reimburseable ONLY under the normal BMW Limited Warranty for that particular item, using an applicable defect code (NOT the "special defect code") and labor operation from the Flat Rate Manual.
