Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair
WARNING: Brake fluid is poisonous. Avoid exposure to skin, eyes, and mouth.CAUTION: Brake fluid damages painted surfaces. Avoid contact of all painted surfaces.
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), pump brake pedal at least 12 times before opening bleeder valve.
PRESSURE BLEEDING
1. Following equipment manufacturers instructions connect approved pressure bleeding equipment to the brake fluid reservoir.
CAUTION: Do not exceed 28 PSI when pressure bleeding brakes. Damage to hydraulic brake parts may result.
2. Using a pressure of 12 - 15 PSI open right rear bleeder valve.
TORQUE: 7mm bleeder valves to 31 - 44 inlb (3.5 - 5.0 Nm)
TORQUE: 9mm bleeder valves to 35 - 53 inlb (4.0 - 6.0 Nm)
3. When clear fluid with no air flows from the valve the brake is bled. Close bleeder valve.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 and complete brake
bleeding in the following order. Left rear brake, right front brake, and the left front brake.
5. Disconnect bleeding equipment. Ensure proper brake fluid level in reservoir.
VACUUM BLEEDING
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), pump brake pedal at least 12 times before opening bleeder valve.
1. Ensure brake master cylinder reservoir is properly filled with brake fluid.
NOTE: Follow manufacturers instructions. Ensure the hose connection at the bleeder valve is secure and air tight.
2. Using a hand held vacuum pump, approved for brake fluid, attach the hose to the right rear bleeder valve.
3. Loosen the bleeder valve, operate the pump as many times as necessary to clear brake of air.
TORQUE: 7mm bleeder valves to 31 - 44 inlb (3.5 - 5.0 Nm)
TORQUE: 9mm bleeder valves to 35 - 53 inlb (4.0 - 6.0 Nm)
4. Close bleeder valve.
5. Repeat steps 1 thru 4. Bleed remaining brakes in the following order Left rear, right front, and left front.
6. Disconnect vacuum pump and ensure that brake master cylinder reservoir is properly filled.
MANUAL BLEEDING
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), pump brake pedal at least 12 times before opening bleeder valve.
1. Remove brake mastercylinder cap. Fill master cylinder reservoir to maximum level. Replace reservoir cap.
2. Have a helper pump the brake pedal slowly 3 or more times (12 or more times for vehicles with ABS). Hold the pedal down on the last stroke.
TORQUE: 7mm bleeder valves to 31 - 44 inlb (3.5 - 5.0 Nm)
TORQUE: 9mm bleeder valves to 35 - 53 inlb (4.0 - 6.0 Nm)
3. Loosen right rear bleeder valve 1/2 turn. When brake fluid stops flowing close bleeder valve.
4. Repeat step 3 until brake fluid flows clear and without air.
5. Repeat steps 1 thru 4 and bleed remaining brakes in the following order. Left rear, right front, and left front.
6. Remove brake mastercylinder cap. Properly fill brake mastercylinder reservoir. Install cap.
