Fuel - Idle Speed Fluctuations

86BMW04

GROUP 13 Fuel System
Bulletin Number 13 03 86 (1158) Page 1 of 3
Montvale, NJ May 1986 Technical Dept.
SUBJECT: Exchange of Existing Idle Control Unit With "Green Stripe" Control Units

MODELS: 318i

Condition: Idle Speed Fluctuations.

Cause: Possible cracking of internal solder joints in idle control unit.

Correction: All idle control units have been inspected and resoldered to assure proper operation. All units produced from the 46th week 1985 or units with green tape at the base of the unit have been corrected.

Corrective
Procedure: 1) Inspect existing idle control unit located in the glove box and determine if the unit has a) green stripe; or b) production date code 46 85 or later. If existing unit does not meet one of these conditions, it must be exchanged for a correct unit. Date code may be shown in two ways (i.e. 46 85 or 85 46). Both versions are OK.

NOTE: Units with green tape are OK regardless of the date on the label. Any other markings (colored dots, etc.) should be disregarded.

2) In addition to checking for the idle control unit, the female pin sockets for the idle control unit should be checked for tightness.

Using a 2.5 mm drill bit, check for a snug fit of the female pin sockets. If any loose pin sockets are found, remove the back half of the connector block (keeping in mind the original locations of the pin sockets). Remove the pin sockets and slightly bend the tabs of the pin sockets as shown in the sketch below.

3) Reinstall pin sockets in original locations as shown in the sketch below:
4) Snap the back half of the connector block back into position, turn on ignition and test electrical power supply to transmission related pin sockets as listed below:

318i: power on pin socket 2, 7, and 10.

318iA (shift lever in P or N): power on pin socket 2 and pin socket 7, no power on pin socket 10.

If there is a mistake in power supply, check original location of the pin sockets again.

5) Reattach connector block to idle control unit.

6) To assure positive retention of connector block to idle control unit, secure the connector block to the control unit using a nylon tie strap.
Warranty
Status: 1) Reimbursement for the complete repair outlined in this bulletin will be provided through normal Warranty claim processing with no limitation on age or mileage of the affected vehicle, only when this repair is performed in conjunction with and within the limits described in the BMW "86 ENGINE CAMPAIGN", and the repair is performed on or before May 31, 1987.

The "complete repair" must use the special defect code and labor operation number (the labor for replacement of the Idle Control Unit is included in the Labor Allowance for the Idle Control Valve adjustment) as outlined in S.I. 13 09 86 (1179).

2) If a component installed as part of the "complete repair" requires subsequent (later) replacement, the required repair will be reimburseable ONLY under the normal BMW Limited Warranty for that particular item, using an applicable defect code (NOT the "special Engine Campaign defect code") and labor operation from the Flat Rate Manual.
