Ignition Timing: Adjustments

CHECKING/ADJUSTING IGNITION TIMING





Important! Conform with instructions for working on engine electrical systems.

Testing Requirements:
- Plug-in TDC transmitter installed.
- Engine at operating temperature = oil temperature > 60°C (140°F).
- Distributor number refer to distributor specifications.
- Connect BMW service tester or BMW digital tester to operating instructions.

Checking Dwell Angle:





- The dwell angle is given by design and can be checked, but not adjusted.
- The TCI control unit is no longer ready for operation in case of malfunction.

Checking/Adjusting Ignition Timing:





- Pull off vacuum hose for advance control.





- Start and run engine at test speed.
- Check ignition timing, adjusting if necessary.
- Correct by loosening the bolt and turning the distributor accordingly.
- + = advanced ignition timing.
- - = retarded ignition timing.
