86BMW07

GROUP 65 Radio and Accessories
Bulletin Number 65 09 86 (1288) Page 1 of 4
Montvale, NJ November 1986 Technical Dept.
SUBJECT: Cassette Removal: Alpine Anti-Theft Radio

This bulletin presents a procedure for the removal of stuck cassettes in the Alpine anti-theft radios.

Note: Alpine radios can be identified by the letter A or letter K as the first character in the radio serial number.

Conditions: Possible conditions that could cause a cassette to not eject are:

^ warped tape cartridge.

^ foreign objects in tape drive (coins, paperclips, etc.).

^ worn-out/fatigued tape.

^ dirty capstans or head causing tape to wind-up around the capstan.

^ damage to tape carrier because of forceful removal through cassette door.

Since these items are not due to a defect of the radio, but rather to improper use by the customer, any charges for cassettes that have to be removed as outlined in this bulletin are to be billed to the customer.

Radio Warranty
Information: The top cover on the radio may have to be removed in order to remove a stuck cassette. This action will not void the radio warranty unless there are signs of damage due to the use of improper tools or unnecessary force while removing the cassette.
ALPINE ANTI-THEFT RADIO

Removal Procedure for Stuck Cassette
Perform this procedure only if the cassette will not eject while pressing the eject button and the following conditions are met:

1) Radio is an "Anti-Theft" model manufactured by Alpine Electronics. Positive identification can be determined by the letter "A" or "K" as the first character in the radio serial number.

2) There is no visible damage to the cassette carrier when viewed through the cassette door.
Note: If there is damage to the cassette carrier, the radio should be sent to Alpine Electronics (see S.I. 65 01 85 (962) for details). The customer is responsible for payment of any repairs, handling and shipping costs.

Removing stuck cassette

Remove radio from vehicle.

Note location of manual eject lever (arrow).

Carefully cut away foil to gain access to manual eject lever.

Slide lever towards to back (see arrow) of the radio, ejecting the cassette.

If the cassette did not eject, proceed to next step.

If the cassette ejected, inspect for any items that would cause it to stick as listed on cover page of this bulletin. Reinstall radio into vehicle and verify proper cassette ejection by using a known good one.

Remove 4 Phillips head screws (see arrows) attaching top cover to radio chassis.

CAUTION: Prevent dirt from entering radio by having clean hands and tools when performing the following steps.

Gently pry up the sides of the top cover.

Gently pry up on the back of the cover with your fingers and lift the cover off.

Inspect cassette carrier and arm (arrow) for damage. If damage is found, forceful removal of the cassette has been attempted. Do not try to repair this damage.

Send to Alpine Electronics for repair at customer expense.

Using a wooden dowel, push the manual eject lever towards the rear of the radio, ejecting the cassette.

If the cassette did not eject, continue to push on the manual eject lever and gently push on the raised portion of the cassette.
Once the cassette has been ejected, inspect the cassette carrier for damage and foreign objects. If any foreign objects cannot be removed or damage to the carrier is observed, send the radio to Alpine Electronics for repair at customer expense.

Replace the top cover. Reinstall radio into vehicle and check for proper cassette ejection using a known good cassette.
