EGR Temperature Sensor: Service and Repair

Fig. 7 coolant sensor & EGR temperature switch installation:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect electrical connector and remove sensor or switch using suitable socket. Pre-heat temperature sensor is located on thermostat housing, and the VP-20 coolant sensor and EGR temperature switch are located on the intake side of the cylinder head, Fig. 7.
3. Install switch using new seal, if equipped, and torque to 13 ft. lbs.
4. Refill cooling system and bleed as follows:
a. Fill radiator and expansion tank to specified levels, allowing time for trapped air to escape, then install radiator cap.
b. Place heater control in fully warm position, start engine and set to run at fast idle.
c. When engine reaches normal operating temperature, open bleed screw on thermostat housing and allow coolant to flow from bleed screw until it is free from bubbles, maintaining coolant level in expansion tank.
d. Close bleed screw and return engine to idle.
