Steering Gear Replace


1. Turn steering wheel to left lock in order to raise piston in steering box.
2. Drain power steering fluid and discard. Do not reuse.
3. Turn front wheels to right lock and after removing cotter pin and castle nut, press off center link from pitman arm with tool No. 32 2 070 or equivalent.
4. Steering wheel and front wheels should be aimed straight ahead. Mark alignment of steering shaft and coupling. Remove lower clamping bolt of steering coupling and slide coupling up. Disconnect hoses at steering box and plug openings.
5. Disconnect power steering box from crossmember and remove.
6. Reverse procedure to install noting the following: Torque steering box to crossmember bolts to 33-37 ft.lbs. (45-50 N-m). Make sure that coupling clamp bolt is in locking groove of shaft and torque to 16-17 ft.lbs. (22-24 N-m). Use new self-locking nuts. Torque hose fitting to 33-37 ft.lbs. (45-50 N-m). Torque center link to pitman arm to 26-30 ft.lbs. (35-40 N-m). Bleed power steering by turning steering wheel from lock to lock with engine idling until no bubbles appear. Fluid level must remain constant at upper mark.
