Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor, then remove oxygen sensor to prevent damage.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifold, remove necessary clamps and hangars and remove exhaust system as an assembly.
4. Remove exhaust system heat shield.
5. Remove nuts and bolts securing propeller shaft to transmission and bolts securing center bearing, pull shaft down from center to disengage centering pin, then secure shaft aside. During installation, preload center bearing .157-.236 inch toward front of vehicle before tightening retaining bolts.
6. Disconnect back-up lamp switch near console attaching points.
7. Remove bolts securing shift console to transmission, and selector rod snap ring and washer, then withdraw selector rod.
8. Remove flywheel dust shield and the speed and reference transmitter cover.
9. Note installation position of speed and reference transmitters, then remove transmitters from clutch housing. Speed transmitter (black electrical connector) faces flywheel ring gear, while reference transmitter (gray identification ring) is installed facing reference pin on flywheel. If sensors are improperly installed, engine will not start.
10. Support transmission and remove bolts securing crossmember to body.
11. Remove bolts securing clutch slave cylinder and secure cylinder aside leaving hose connected.
12. Disconnect electrical connector from back-up lamp switch and release wiring from retaining straps.
13. Place suitable block between engine and front crossmember and lower transmission until engine rests on block.
14. Remove transmission mounting bolts and the transmission.
15. Reverse procedure to install.
