Engine: Service and Repair

Prior to disconnecting fuel lines, disconnect master relay and carefully depressurize fuel system.

Mark installation position of all hoses and electrical connectors prior to removal.
1. Disconnect positive and negative cables from battery, and drain cooling system.
2. Raise and support vehicle, remove transmission and disconnect exhaust system.
3. Remove bolts securing power steering pump and secure pump aside, leaving hoses connected.
4. Loosen A/C compressor tensioning bolts and remove upper bracket retaining bolts, then remove compressor and secure aside, leaving hoses connected.
5. Disconnect hoses from radiator, loosen fan shroud clamps and hang shroud over cooling fan.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors from radiator temperature switches, if equipped.
7. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect cooler lines from radiator, then plug lines and open fittings.
8. On all models, remove radiator mounting bolts, radiator and the fan shroud.
9. Remove hood support and gas pressure spring, then install suitable locks to secure hood in open position.
10. Remove screw securing harness ground near battery, open wire retaining straps, then disconnect electrical connectors from engine compartment temperature sensor (next to battery) and oxygen sensor.
11. Remove inner glove box trim panels, disconnect electrical connectors from idle and fuel injection control unit, then push harness out into engine compartment.
12. Disconnect primary and secondary leads from ignition coil and electrical connector from sensor below coil.
13. Disconnect electrical connectors from air cleaner intake duct and air flow sensor, and remove cap and relay next to sensor.
14. Loosen clamp securing duct to intake manifold, then remove air cleaner/flow sensor assembly.
15. Remove cap from relay board, then disconnect main harness connector behind relay board and connector to ignition control unit.
16. Disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connector from firewall mounted distributor vacuum control switch.
17. Disconnect cables and vacuum hoses from throttle body and remove transmission cable bracket.
18. Disconnect and plug fuel hoses and remove ``U'' shaped bracket.
19. Disconnect coolant hoses between engine and body.
20. Disconnect engine to chassis ground straps, then remove engine mount nuts and engine damper assembly.
21. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine, and remove engine assembly, securing wiring harnesses to engine to prevent damage.
22. Reverse procedure to install.
