SUBJECT: Steering Box Mounting Bolts
MODELS: 5 and 6 Series
Situation: The steering box can sometimes emit a "cracking" noise when the steering wheel is moved from side to side. This can be caused by an improper torque on the steering box mounting bolts, and can affect 5 Series cars produced from 09/81 until 09/87, and 6 Series cars produced from 05/82 until 09/87.
Correction: When faced with a complaint of this nature, install a 10 mm flat washer, P/N 31 11 1 114 348, under the head of the bolt, as illustrated.
Torque to 40-47 N-M (29-34 ft.lbs).
