SUBJECT: Driver's Electric Seat With Memory and Electric Door Mirrors With Memory

MODEL: 7-Series (E 32)

The operation and programming of the driver's seat have been changed for easier operation. The positions of the outside mirrors are now also recorded along with the seat positions. Both the outside mirror positions and the seat positions can be recalled by pressing any of the three recall buttons.

1, 2, 3 = Store and recall buttons Memory = Program button
As an aid for the driver when parking or moving the vehicle backwards, the outside passenger mirror will automatically tilt downward (allowing a view of the curb/lower part of the vehicle) when reverse gear is selected. The driver may override this function by positioning the mirror selector switch to the passenger side.

1 = Seat base switches 2 = Seat back and headrest switches
The seat positioning switch, found on the outside edge of the seat, has been redesigned. By pressing these switches in the appropriate direction, the seat can be positioned without having to look at the switch.
Function

The positions of the outside mirrors and driver's seat are transmitted to the memory by potentiometers located in each motor. These resistance readings are recorded in the memory seatmirror ECU upon programming of a seat-mirror position.

Programming

Ignition must be in either position 1 or 2. Depress the MEMORY button. It will illuminate to indicate that the system is ready to memorize positions. Then press the desired button (1, 2, or 3) that you want these positions stored under. The MEMORY button will then go out indicating the positions have been memorized.

Note: Programming is not possible in reverse gear.

Recall of Programmed Positions

Individual positions are recalled by pressing the appropriate button. Automatic positioning of the seat after briefly depressing the desired button is only possible under these conditions:
^ ignition in position 1; or
^ ignition in position 0 and the automatic interior light control activated. This allows the driver to select a seat position before sitting down. If the driver does not select a seat position before the interior lights go out, the desired button will have to be held down until all movements are completed.

If any of the three store or recall buttons are depressed while in this automatic positioning mode, movement will stop immediately. Touch the desired button to continue the automatic positioning mode.

Automatic positioning is not possible in ignition position 2. The desired position switch must be held down until all movements are completed.

The motors in the mirrors operate at two speeds. The speed for manual adjustment is 2.5~ per second; faster rate of operation is used for memory recall.

The slower manual adjustment speed is accomplished by pulsing the motors at a cycle of 2OHz at 12V. At battery voltage below 9V this pulsing action is cancelled.

The positions of the seat and mirrors are stored In a non-volatile memory (NVRAM) in the seat-mirror ECU (located under the driver's seat). The non-volatile memory will retain these positions in the event of loss of power.

The ECU has a built in microprocessor that detects problems and stores this information for diagnosis with the Service Tester. It also has the ability to shut off power to the relays which power the motors in the event of a failure.

Emergency manual movement of the seat is possible for repair purposes. This procedure can be found in the Repair Manual.
