This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 61 03 89 (1831) dated January 1990. It incorporates a revised defect code.
Please remove and discard S.I. 61 03 89 (1831) dated January 1990 from your S.I. binder. Retain the Attachments for use with this new bulletin.
SUBJECT: Moisture in Connector - X13
MODEL: E32 (vehicles produced prior to 2/88)
Situation: Due to insufficient sealing of the wires/harnesses entering the passenger compartment through the firewall grommet, water can drip onto connector X13 causing conductive films/corrosion to form.
Correction: Vehicles produced 2/88 and later are equipped with an improved firewall grommet for optimum sealing against water intrusion. This new style grommet can be retrofitted to earlier produced vehicles with the installation of repair harness P/N 61 13 8 350 201 using the attached repair procedure.
Note: If a SRS Front Sensor Repair Harness (P/N 61 12 1 378 295) has been installed previously (see S.I. 72 03 88 (1647)), a new SRS Front Sensor Repair Harness with additional grommet must also be installed. Refer to S.I. 72 03 88 (1647) dated 9/89.
All aftermarket accessories that have wires routed through the firewall grommet must be rerouted through E-Box as per S.I. 61 04 89 (1836).
This grommet is only to be modified via authorized repair procedures from BMW.
If the grommet is punctured/cut it must be replaced following the repair procedure listed in this Service Information.
Service Action Label
Instruction: This Service Action has been assigned code number 23. After the prescribed work has been performed, obtain a label (SD 89-003) and
a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label.
b) Punch out code number 23 printed on the label.
c) Bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix it to the "B" pillar (on driver's front door) as shown.
If the car affected already has a label from a previous Service Action/ Recall Campaign, affix this new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.
