SUBJECT: Automatic Transmission ZF 4HP22 EH
MODELS: All
Complaint: Case 1: Transmission Fault Indicator Light stays on after engine is started. Vehicle can only be driven in the Emergency program.
Case 2: When braking in one of the drive positions, engine RPM drops below specifications when vehicle has stopped.
Cause: The solenoid for the converter (lockup) clutch is grounding out against the transmission case.
Correction: Shut off ignition, remove plug from EH transmission control unit and connect to universal adapter. Measure resistance between pin 25 and vehicle ground as well as between pin 1 and vehicle ground. If there is no ground, there is another cause. However, if there is ground (approx. 0 Ohm), remove valve body and rotate the solenoid for converter lockup clutch as shown (curved arrow) so that there is sufficient gap between the connectors and transmission housing (see picture). Tighten the solenoid in the new position.
Put a dot of green paint on the transmission control unit plug after it has been checked and/or corrected.

Information: When working on an EH transmission, absolute cleanliness is essential! Check tightening torques - see technical data. Check other plug connections on valve body. Check oil level and top up as necessary - see repair manual.
