SUBJECT: Voluntary Exhaust Emissions Recall Campaign No. 89E-A02

MODELS: 1988/1989 750iL (Produced 9/87 thru 9/88)

BMW of North America, Inc. will initiate a voluntary emission-related recall campaign to correct vehicles that may be in non-compliance with Federal and California Emissions Standards.

The campaign consists of the installation of a new set of improved distributor rotor adaptors.

This Service Information Bulletin outlines specifics for implementation of this campaign. A copy of the customer letter is attached for your information.

Note:
The above parts are contained in the 750iL Service Action Update Kit under P/N 12 51 9 061 688.
Corrective Procedure:
Inspect the underhood area for the emissions recall label No. 89E-A02 as shown on page 2. If this label is present, do not proceed further.

If not present, proceed as follows:

1) Remove both ignition distributor caps and rotors (Refer to Group 12, E32 Repair Manual).

2) Remove both rotor adaptors by removing adaptor M8 x 25 retaining bolts using Special Tool P/N 88 88 6 002 180.
Caution: Failure to use the above special Hex Tool may result in "stripping" the adaptor bolt.

3) Install improved rotor adaptors on camshaft noting the engagement of the locating dowel pin.
4) Install new M8 x 25 adaptor bolts and tighten with special Hex Tool.
Tightening Torque: 24 N-m/17 ft.lbs.

5) Reinstall distributor rotors.
Tightening torque: 6 N-m/4 ft.lbs.

6) Reinstall distributor caps and hoods.



7) With a ball point pen print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see Illustration). Peel label from its backing and affix it to the right inner fender vertical panel.
Note: Emission Recall Labels (SD 89-02) will be sent to each dealer under separate cover. Additional labels may be obtained from your Regional Technical Manager.
Warranty Status:
Dealers will be reimbursed for this recall through Warranty Claim Entry.

BMW has determined that your 1988/1989 BMW 750iL may, under some circumstances, be releasing air pollutants that exceed Federal and California emission standards and is in need of corrective action. Therefore, BMW has initiated two voluntary exhaust emissions recall campaigns, numbers 89E-A01 and 89E-A02.


These corrective measures consist of modifications to the ignition and fuel management system and replacement of the distributor rotor adapters. Your authorized BMW dealer will determine whether one or both modifications apply to your vehicle


These modifications require approximately 4 hours and will be performed at no charge to you. These measures will assure your car maintains its low emissions and durability.


In case this free repair is not performed, your vehicle may fail the inspection and maintenance (smog check) as required in your state.
