This Service Information Bulletin supersedes S.I. 13 01 90 (3003) dated February 1990. It includes instructions for a Service Action Label.
Please remove and discard S.I. 13 01 90 (3003) dated February 1990 from your S.I. binder.
SUBJECT: Long Cranking Times and/or Poor Engine Performance
MODELS: 535i, 635CSI, 735i with M1.1, M1.3 Motronic Engine Management (up to 4/89 production)
Cause: Ref/RPM sensor improperly adjusted or adjustment not correctly tightened.
Correction: Whenever the above models visit the workshop for any reason, the
Ref/RPM sensor holddown nut should be checked for correct torque.
Note: The torque of the sensor holddown nut has been checked on all M30 engines as of May 1989 production. Therefore it is not necessary to perform the holddown nut check on vehicles produced after April 1989.
Workshop
Points: 1) The correct sensor tip/pulse wheel tooth gap is nominally 1 mm.
2) A Ref/RPM sensor which is incorrectly adjusted, loose or damaged will not set a fault in the DME fault memory. A physical inspection is necessary.
3) When using ferrous feeler gauges, allow for the additional, artificial "drag" created by the sensor magnetic field.
Service Action Label
Instructions: This Service Action has been assigned code number 41. After the precribed work has been performed, obtain a label (SD-89-003) and
a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label.
b) Punch out code number 41 printed on the label.
c) Bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix it to the "B" pillar (on driver's front door) as shown.
If the car affected already has a label from a previous Service Action/ Recall Campaign, affix this new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.
Warranty
Information: This repair is reimbursable under the terms and conditions of the BMW Emissions Warranty of 5 Years or 50,000 Miles.
Any questions regarding warranty coverage should be discussed with your District Service Manager.
