Case 2 Contol Unit Needs Encoding
CASE 2
Correction: In the case that a control unit needs encoding (because of replacement, for example) on a car where pin 18 had previously been removed from the diagnostic connector, proceed as follows:
- Reinstall pin 18 to the diagnostic connector.
- Install a new diagnostic connector cap (P/N 12 52 1 724 690).
Procedure: - Call up and print the DME fault memory contents (if any).
- Cancel fault memory of DME.
- With the ignition switched OFF, detach diagnostic connector cap and unscrew connector retaining ring counterclockwise.
- Remove diagnostic connector from mounting bracket and invert. Pull back underside weather boot.
- Locate electrical pin 18 (programming circuit) which has a 1.5 mm green
/blue wire. Connector should be found folded back and taped within the underside weather boot.
- Release electrical pin latching collar by disengaging the dual locking
- tabs and rotating the collar counterclockwise (see illustration).
- Reinstall pin 18 into the diagnostic connector. Confirm pin placement by small numbers next to pin position.
- Relatch locking collar with clockwise rotation and refit underside weather boot.
- Remount the diagnostic connector and install retaining ring.
- Install new diagnostic connector cap.
- Verify correct "CHECK ENGINE" light function and engine operation.
