SUBJECT: SRS Control Units
MODELS: E23 (7 Series) and E24 (6 Series)
SITUATION: These vehicles were originally equipped with SRS Control Units manufactured by CIPRO.
SRS Control Units manufactured by SIEMENS were phased into production on the E24 and will be the only type available as a replacement part for E23s and E24s.
DIAGNOSiS: While performing diagnosis on this system, it will be important to determine which system is installed into the vehicle.
This can be accomplished by observing the SRS indicator light.
When turning on the ignition (RUN position) the SRS light will:
1) come on briefly
2) go out
3a) CIPRO -- stay on
3b) SIEMENS -- flash for approx. 5 minutes and then stay on.
Diagnostic procedures for both systems are given in the 6-Series Repair Manual - Group 32 (dated 4/88).
When replacing the SRS Control Unit for an internal defect use the following defect code:
