SUBJECT:
Recall Campaign No. 89V-179
MODELS:
All 6 Series with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)
BMW of North America, Inc. has voluntarily initiated a safety-related defect recall campaign. The NHTSA-assigned recall campaign number is No. 89V-179.
This Service Information Bulletin outlines the specific procedures for the implementation of the campaign.
Vehicles Affected:
All 6 Series (E24) equipped with SRS.
Description of Defect:
The potential defect involves the two frontal impact sensors mounted on the left and right inner fenders within the engine compartment.
The threshold deployment level of the sensors as employed in these vehicles is unduly sensitive to severe vertical motion, such as experienced when driving through a large pothole or over a curb at excessive speed. This could cause the air bag to deploy without an actual crash or impact severe enough to cause visible damage to the vehicle.
Correction:
Replacement of front impact sensors with new front impact sensors (P/N 65 77 1 394 319). These new sensors are less sensitive to severe vertical motion.
Repair Procedure:
Replace both front impact sensors with P/N 65 77 1 394 319.
Important:
Comply with safety procedures as stated in Repair Manual No.2, BMW 6 Series, Group 32, dated 4/88.
Use only special tool 88 88 6 002 110.
Note:
Because the vehicle's battery is disconnected during this procedure, the following system memories will be lost:
1. Radio
2. OBC
3. Memory Seat
Prior to disconnecting the vehicle's battery, record the radio's present stations (AM & FM).
After reconnecting the vehicle's battery:
1. Re-code the radio
2. Verify preset stations
3. Reset clock and language functions of OBC
The customer should be advised (prior to performance of the recall campaign) that the memorized positions of the driver's seat will be lost.
Recall Campaign Label Instructions:
This recall campaign has been assigned code number 42. After the prescribed work has been performed, obtain a label (SD 89-006) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label;
b) punch out code number 42 printed on the label;
c) bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. The affix it to the driver's door as shown.
If the car already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix this label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.
Parts Information:
Each vehicle will require 2 front impact sensors (P/N 65 77 1 394 319).
Warranty Status:
Reimbursement for this recall campaign will be provided through Campaign Entry.
