Overhauling Starter
OVERHAULING STARTER- Starter Disassembled -
Check armature and field coil with 220 volt test lamp.
Touch commutator and packet of plates with prods of tester.
Lamp comes on when there is ground replace armature.
Connect ammeter (60 ampere measuring range) in circuit and apply prods to commutator briefly from plate to plate.
Testing voltage 2 to 4 volts.
Gage deflection must be equal between the individual plates.
Serious deviations indicate a break. Replace armature having a break.
Check field coil for ground.
Visual inspection.
Replace burnt or damaged coils.
Fine grind commutator.
Commutator diameter (A) must not be less than 33 mm (1.299").
Undercut commutator plates.
Insulation must be 0.5 mm (0.020") deeper than the plates.
Press out worn bushing.
Installation:
Before installation, soak new bushing in engine oil for at least 1/2 hour and then press it in until flush.

Mark position of pole shoe to guarantee reinstallation in same position later.
Unscrew four pole shoe screws.
Take pole shoes and field coil out of pole housing.
Installation:
Align pole shoes to be exactly parallel with longitudinal axis before tightening pole screws to final torque value.
Place paper insulation strips between field coil and pole housing.
