This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 13 08 88 (1718) dated April 1992. It includes the new flash codes for the Engine Control Module (DME) M3.3.1 system. Please remove and discard S.I. 13 08 88 (1718) dated April 1992 from your S.I. binder and also discard the previous flash code card SD 92-002 without the new information for engine control module version M3.3.1.
SUBJECT:
On-Board Emission System Diagnostic Guide (flash codes)
MODELS:
All (as of 1989 model year)
Situation:
The California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.) requires that BMW make public an explanation for the On-Board Emission System Diagnostic flash codes. In order to comply, the enclosed card has been developed. It allows a mechanic without BMW Special Tools or Equipment to diagnose an emission system failure.
Note:
The flash-code is not a substitute for the BMW Service Tester and a thorough troubleshooting procedure. It is only helpful as a quick and rough predetermination of some possible failure sources.
Additional cards can be ordered through:

All malfunction codes are stored in the MCU memory. Stored malfunction codes are read out without the BMW diagnostic module by switching the ignition switch to the engine-run key position and depressing the accelerator 5 times to wide open throttle (w.o.t.) within 5 seconds. The 2nd MCU (M70 Engine) is activated by depressing the accelerator 6 times.
The malfunction codes are stored in the MCU memory until one of the following has been accomplished:
^ The memory is cleared through the dealer's 2013 diagnostic module service tester.
^ The vehicle battery or the MCU is disconnected.
^ The engine is started 60 times without repeat of failure.
On-Board Diagnostic System on BMW Vehicles as of 1989 Model Year
All 1989 and later BMW vehicles with the M1.2, M1.3, M1.7, M3.1, M3.3, or M3.3.1 Bosch Motronic fuel injection and ignition system will be equipped with a self-diagnostic system. This system detects any emission-related malfunction of an emission control device that would cause the vehicle to fail to comply with certification standards.
Diagnostic Flash Codes
In the table, those components are listed which, when detected as malfunctioning, will cause the diagnostic system to illuminate the "Check Engine" light.
