Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Service and Repair
CAUTION: Improper handling could cause unwanted activation of the air bag system (SRS) and lead to injury!
Steering Wheel:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and cover the pole.
2. Unscrew the lower plastic cover section.
3. Pull the orange plug out of it's holder and disconnect.
4. Unscrew the horn-air-bag assembly. (Requires use of tamper-proof hex tool)
5. Pull off the electrical plug and remove the airbag unit.
CAUTION: Place the airbag unit in a safe place (trunk) with the padded side facing up!
6. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position (marks on the steering gear and the steering spindle indicate straight ahead position).
7. Unscrew the steering wheel nut.
8. Turn the ignition switch to the run (ON) position and remove the steering wheel.
Instrument Cluster:
9. Remove the two screws at the top of the instrument cluster.
10. Cover the exposed portion of the steerning column with a clean soft cloth.
11. Pry out the top of the instrument cluster slightly and pull forward to the steering column. Then fold it down completely and remove.
12. Pull up the release levers next to the instrument cluster electrical connectors and remove the connectors.
"Check Engine" Light Location:
13. Replace bulb 16.
14. Reinstall the instrument cluster in reverse manner.
Lock Pin Location:
15. Position the steering wheel to engage the lock pin on the steering column.
16. Install a new self-locking nut and torque to 80 Nm (58 lbs.).
17. Install the airbag unit in reverse manner. Torque the airbag unit to 5 Nm (3.5 lbs.).
18. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
