SUBJECT: Coding Plug Replacement
MODELS: 5 Series (E34) and 7 Series (E32) - all produced 2/89 and later
General
Information: The instrument cluster redesign (installed in the above mentioned vehicles) has a coding plug which mounts directly into the cluster and is no longer part of the wiring harness. It is, therefore, possible to remove and install the coding plug in this cluster without disconnecting the cluster from the vehicle.
Under no circumstances can there be any residual power left in the instrument cluster when the coding plug is installed.
In order to guarantee that there is no residual power remaining in the instrument cluster, all multi-pin connectors from the vehicle harness must be disconnected from the instrument cluster for at least one minute. This will allow the internal buffer capacitors time to discharge.
If this is not done, the residual voltage can alter or totally destroy data.
Under certain circumstances, such damage to the data may not become apparent until some later time, when it can result in instrument cluster malfunctions.
Important Note:
On all of the above-mentioned vehicles equipped with On-Board Computer (BC IV), the instrument cluster coding plug supplies data to the on-board computer. In order to ensure that the correct data are passed to the onboard computer, the BC IV must remain disconnected from its multi-pin connector for at least one minute after the instrument cluster coding plug has been replaced.
