SUBJECT:
Aftermarket Installations

MODELS:
E32 and E34

Situation:
Aftermarket installations requiring routing of wires (from the engine compartment into the passenger compartment) through the firewall:

1. New Installations

Wires should only be routed through the E-Box and its air duct as shown (also see S.I. Bulletin 65 02 87 (1373) dated April 1987) Important: No additional wires should be routed through the firewall grommet (located behind the front power distribution box) unless specifically directed by BMW.

2. Review of aftermarket installations already performed

If an aftermarket accessory has already been installed (using the grommet located behind the fuse box or any other rubber grommet), proceed as follows:

Seal all pierced holes by carefully applying a generous amount of BMW glass sealing compound (P/N 81 22 9 400 013) and fill until flush with the outer surface. Before sealing, make sure that the bottom rubber block is firmly in place in the grommet.

Hint:
To ensure access to and proper sealing of the pierced holes, it is strongly suggested that the driver's side wiper arm and the plastic inlet grille be removed.

The dealer should ensure that any accessories which have been installed with wires routed through any rubber grommet or any other access hole (other than specified above) are properly sealed.

We urge you to review your customer files in order to determine the need for corrective measures according to the instructions in this bulletin.

Warranty Information:
Since the work time involved is related to aftermarket accessories, it cannot be claimed under warranty.
