Instrument Cluster - Erratic Gauge/Display Operation

SUBJECT: Instrument Cluster (Prior to Redesign)

MODELS: 5 Series (E34) and 7 Series (E32) (equipped with instrument cluster prior to redesign (before 2/89)

Situation: The Repair Procedure outlined below should be followed in the event of the following complaints:

Total mileage "jumps" or is a multiple of the distance actually covered.

All displays fail except speedometer, tachometer, and telltales.

Correction: Replace only the coding plug, not the printed circuit board.

An odometer notice sticker must be filled out and affixed to the left door frame. Refer to S.I. 62 03 88 (1598). Record mileage and replacement in the vehicle's service booklet.
Parts
Information: When ordering, read out the coding plug code by keeping the trip odometer reset button depressed while turning the ignition switch from "OFF" to "ACCESSORY" position ("R"). The code can also be read off the removed coding plug.

Note: The replacement coding plug starts with a "5" in the case of the E32 and with a "4" in the case of the E34. The remaining digits are unchanged.
