Correction:

Check all affected vehicles for the presence of the older version mechanical brake light switch.

Whenever possible, the repairs outlined in this bulletin should be performed in conjunction with Recall 96V-110, S.I. 32 02 96, to minimize customer inconvenience.

Note:
Electronic brake light switches already installed as original equipment or replacement parts in E32 M60/M70 and E34 M60 vehicles are not affected by this Recall Campaign.

However, E32 M60/M70 and E34 M60 vehicles that are included in this Recall Campaign that are equipped with a mechanical switch must have the mechanical switch replaced with the electronic switch.

Note:
The older version mechanical brake light switch (P/N 61 31 1 382 385) can be easily identified by operating the brake pedal. If a double click is heard from the switch (when pressing the pedal and when releasing the pedal) an older version mechanical brake light switch is installed.

Replace any of the older version mechanical brake light switches (P/N 61 31 1 382 385) encountered with either the improved mechanical brake light switch (P/N 61 31 8 360 417) or (in the case of E32 M60/M70 and E34 M60 vehicles only) with the electronic brake light switch (P/N 61 31 8 356 527).

Note:
Because of a difference in pedal return force, E32 M60/M70 and E34 M60 vehicles should only be equipped with the electronic brake light switch (P/N 61 31 8 356 527).

Recall Campaign Label Instructions:

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 163. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-070) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 163 printed on the label and,





c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
